Weddelbrook - prettiest village 1962

The name Weddelbrook stems from old Saxon times and means a place at a ford through marshy ground. The marshy ground was today's meadow and pasture land north of the village. At one point one could wade through the marshy ground because the word "Weddel" means more or less wading.

In the last hundred years history was rather diverse. In the Prussian governorate Schleswig Weddelbrook was a administration village with a community office for several communities. In this time also falls the non-noble founding of a manor in the village. Rich industrialists from Elmshorn, Hamburg or Hannover alternate owned the manor. With the parcelling at the beginning of the century and in the thirties many new settlers found here a new job and often a new home.

Weddelbrook and Mönkloh were managed as one community during the Nazi time. This status soon changed after the end of the war.
Today Weddelbrook presents itself as a village with diverse structure. It didn't stay a pure farming village but has also two industrial businesses: the forwarder Boyens and the company Thaler for cable installation machines. In the last 25 years many people moved to Weddelbrook because they appreciate the village.

The village's jewel is the mill pond. It was created around 1770, to deliver energy to a oak mill. The present flour mill was built in 1868 after a fire. It is still used for milling grains.
A lovely arranged walkway runs around the 4,5ha large lake. Along the path is the swimming place and the "Bauernstuben". Here, one can stop by in the summer at Heiner Wolters. The actual inn is situated on the opposite side of the village. It has been owned by the same family for over two hundred years. Meetings of the municipal council and clubs take place here; family occasions are being celebrated and balls arranged. The youngsters from the surrounding area meet here every fortnight for the disco.
